Rappahannock Newt Staff Writer ‘ It was like going to the Academy Awards and waiting for all the celebrities to show up, except these were members of the political and media elite instead of movie stars. . The occasion was the marriage of Federal Reserve chairman Alan Greenspan and NBC news correspondent Andrea Mitchell, which took place at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Inn at Little Washington. • Photographers and reporters jockeyed for position on the front porch of The Inn while the bride and groom and then the guests began arriving just before 1 p.m. Familiar face after familiar face climbed out of luxury cars, and members of the media and other members of the crowd jwho had gathered to. see these famous people would whisper, “Oh, there’s Henry Kissinger,’’ or “Who’s that?” « Most arrived by car, but several showed up in one of iwo buses which came out from Washington, D.C. David Brinkley was one of them. When asked by one reporter when the last time was that he rode a bus, he answered that it was when he got married. That brought a laugh from the crowd. Some arrived by helicopter which landed by the ^Washington Fire Hall, and were then shuttled to town. ' Some of the other easily recognized guests were Barbara Walters and Sen. John Warner, Katharine Graham, Ben Bradlee and Sally Quinn, Colin Powell, Tim Russert, Bob Strauss, William Safire, Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, Alice Rivlin, Lawrence Tisch, and Judge William Webster.
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg officiated for the wedding ceremony, but she was able to get by photographers without them seeing her by entering through a side door to The Inn. ! It was rumored for a while that John F. Kennedy Jr. Jvould be coming, but he didn’t show. The photographer who did his wedding, however, was the same one for this wedding.
Security was extremely tight, and there were 12 security men there for Mr. Greenspan, Henry Kissinger, and Judge Ginsburg.
Chef Patrick O’Connell of The Inn said that Ms. Mitchell had been encouraged by several friends to have her wedding at The Inn, and shortly after she and Mr. Greenspan announced their intentions in December, they reserved the date. The couple had visited at least a couple of times prior to this weekend. The whole event was kept very hush-hush, said Mr. O’Connell, partly because it was a possibility that President Clinton might attend. 4-C The couple were married under dogwood branches and the bride, wearing a champagne color lace dress by Oscar de la Renta, was given away by her father. All of the guests’ chairs were decorated with a profusion of flowers, including delicate pastel tulips and roses, as was the whole garden. Following the ceremony came a champagne toast. Canapes were served, including little wild morel pizzas topped with tiny shavings of Virginia country ham.
