turn 18, the emphasis in court changes from rehabilitation to protecting the community. Within two months of his six-month sentence being suspended, said Mr. Luke, Mr. Butler committed another offense. Judge Charles Foley said that Mr. Butler had been charged with possession of alcohol, marijuana, and reckless driving since his suspension. “If this kind of activity continues you will spend a lot of time wearing an orange jumpsuit picking up trash,” the judge told Mr. Butler. Mr. Butler’s sixmonth sentence was reimposed, and Judge Foley suspended half of it, so Mr. Butler will serve three months, probably on work release. He is to report to jail at 6 p.m. next Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday, Nisheen Stephens, 24, of Maryland, pleaded guilty to obtaining goods by false pretenses. According to Major Rick MacWelch of the Sheriff’s Office, Mr. Stephens had purchased a Sharpei dog from Yvla Lindgren of Spenryville and gave her several bad checks to pay for the dog. The matter has been cleared up now, but Mr. Stephens was fined $500. Judge Foley gave him six-months suspended.
