a snake vertebra with each peck while running alongside the racer. It was a systematic attack. Eventually the bird immobilized the snake by cracking its vertebrae. When the head was reached, the bird struck again and blinded the snake. The reptile could only writhe helplessly.
Since that experience, I have seen a Brown Thrasher immobilize, blind, and leave to die, a snake in exactly the kind of attack used by the mocking bird. What 1 do not know in either case is whether the bird was driving the snake away from the nest before or after eggs or young were swallowed. Was I witnessing prevention of revenge? It does seem justice was being served. Nature works these things out if we are patient enough to let it happen and lucky enough to witness the events.
