fire cannot come so close and catch the house on fire. Also important is a good wide driveway so that the firetrucks can get to the house. He also suggests keeping at least SO feet of area around the house cleared of debris.
Right after the crews left the Amissville fire, they were called to a field fire on Route 630 in Huntly which had been caused by downed power lines catching the brush' on fire.
The fire was near the house of Laura and Neil Patton. Luckily they were home, otherwise she felt that the fire could have burned all the way up the mountain. Around 2:30, Mr. Patton stepped outside the house and smelled the smoke and looked over the ridges to the east and noticed flames. Their electricity was out, due to high winds, so they hooked up four garden hoses and began to spray water around the house to keep it away from there. Their phone was also dead, but they had a cell phone and called 911.
Firefighters from the Amissville fire responded along with Chester Gap. “Everyone was so kind and so nice,” said Mrs. Patton. She was also impressed with the quick response. ^ 7
After th$ fire was gut and eve^- 4 one left, a worker came to reconnect the electric lines and noticed thatahefire had started again. Mrs. Patton said the flames were IS to, 20 feet high, and had apparently rekindled from fire that had started in between poison ivy vines and tree trunks. The firefighters returned and stayed until about 7 p.m. to extinguish the fire.
