In Virginia, if someone is convicted of two petit larcenies and commits a third petit larceny, the judge can treat that third charge as a grand larceny if he(she) wants to. That ups the prison time and/or fine considerably.
The law now says that a person can be said to be in possession of alcohol if they have it in their body, even if there is no physical evidence.
If a fight starts on school grounds and is continued on public property later on, said Capt. Brown, the school still has the right to get involved and can kick students out of school for that offense.
Capt. Brown has taught the threehour class to most of the 8th and 11th grade students by now; it is taught in two sessions.
“It is really enlightening the kids to the laws and consequences,” he said, adding that he believes the school is glad to have the class taught. Capt. Brown feels that if the kids know the laws and consequences then they will be less inclined to violate the law.
