To suggest that someone can campaign day in and day out for governor while still doing the job is disingenuous. Virginia taxpayers would, in effect, be giving him a paid leave of absence.
Though the public might not care much what Gilmore does, if he chooses to stay on instead of resigning the issue will certainly become a distraction during the campaign in what could be a very close race. Every time Gilmore campaigned somewhere in daytime hours, Democratic critics would contend he was doing it at the expense of the citizens of Virginia.
