The grand re-opening of the Sperryville Flea Market took place this past Saturday much to the delight of many of the vendors.
The market is now being held at the old motel on Route 211 just west of Sperryville and just before Mountain Side Market. The market was previously located at The Emporium in Sperryville but the new location will afford the vendors a luxury they didn’t have before and one that most flea markets cannot boast.
The rooms of the previous motel are set up like little shops, each vendor has an individual separate space and each can lock that space up after Saturday’s and Sunday’s crowds depart and leave it all set up for next weekend.
“If we get the right advertising I think we’ll do fine,” said Sandra Leap of Harrisonburg, who has been a vendor at the Sperryville Flea Market for the last three years. “The traffic is not as heavy here as it was at U.S. 522 and Route 211, but if we can get the traffic up here it’ll be alright. We have done pretty well and it’s fun — you meet so many people.”
Mrs. Leap said she has had a wide variety of customers from all over the world — France, Germany, even Sweden, and a large number from up and down the east coast.
The Smith family, originally from Houston, Texas, moved to Culpeper in 1996, after they came to Virginia to visit a friend in Richmond, traveled around, and decided they liked the area. They have set up a Texas-style barbecue
