This is the first of a series of monthly columns from the Theatre at Washington, Va. The focus of the series will be on various aspects of the Theatre’s place in the community as well as on upcoming performances.
The Theatre was built about 1948 and for many years served principally as a movie house. But even then some live programs — such as music from the Grand Old Opry — were brought in. Those were the days when Hollywood was able to ensure packed audiences for its movies night after night, and this was true in Little Washington, as it was throughout the country.
With the help of readers who § recall the Theatre in those early. - day*, a later column will be devoted . entirely to its role in the community at that time.
Movies are still shown at the Theatre. The Rappahannock Association for Arts and the . Community regularly presents a “Third Friday of the Month film series.” On the 25th of this month the film will be the satirical British comedy Cold Comfort Farm. The usual size of the audience for films is about one third what it was in the 1950s.
But the quality of the films RAAC presents is exceptional.
