This is Part 1 of a two-part series oh fledgling birds.
The impulse to rescue a seemingly abandoned fledgling bird is a good on£ though the result is usually a disaster for the bird and sad frustration for the rescuer. It’s the time for the yisar when young birds leave the next and are interpreted as having fallen from the next and been abandoned by the parents. My telephone conversations run something like this: '*' “I have a baby bird that fell out of tne next. What do I feed it?” I can supply the answer, but first, stop and know this: most likely, the bird has not fallen from the nest, it has left in a normal fashion. It was time to get “...all the eggs out of one basket.” Nature has determined that scattering the fledglings is more likely to insure survival for at least some of them. Most would-be rescuers assume the young bird that seems so helpless has been abandoned. It is helpless to a degree, but it is being watched and fed by the parents who locate and feed it by it’s food calls. These same cries probably attracted the attention of the rescuer.
The constant vocalization of fledglings also attracts predators such as cats and dogs. A cat will kill and probably eat the young bird. A dog, attracted to sound and fluttering movement, will in all probability pick up the frowsy looking bundle of feather in his mouth. The result is the same whether dog or cat.
If the young bird is on the ground and dogs and cats are in the vicinity, it is wise to place the fledgling in some container and put it our of reach of pets. A paper towel or kleenex lined strawberry box or shallow plastic container make excellent temporary nests. The problem will be to keep the bird in the container. For that reason, choose a container with sides high enough so the young bird cannot jump out immediately. I often place may hand or a piece of
