Traditionally with the end of May, beginning of June comes the strawberry season. My four year old checked the patch for two weeks and not a ripe berry, however, just this past weekend we found the first ripe strawberry. I thought the child had won the lottery. She now guards the patch to make sure that the berries are indeed red enough and big enough for picking.
Whether you are eating them plain, serving them for dessert, freezing for the winter months or making preserves, strawberries are definitely a fruit to be treasured.
If you don't have your'own, probably the best way to buy strawberries is to go to a pick-your-own farm, then you could be certain of their peak condition. They should be slightly soft
