Mr. McCarthy and other Board members pointed out many businesses that had tried and failed here such as hotels, camp grounds, restaurants and a golf course. They stressed that they are not adverse to new business, in fact, the county has no business tax which is an incentive.
Mr. McCarthy said that Rappahannock does not have the road or airport access other counties around us do, nor do we have the services. And, he said, Rappahannock is not on the way to anywhere it is more isolated than counties like Fauquier or Culpeper. He added this is one reason many people like it and is also a reason for some of the tourist business we get.
Jackson Supervisor Ron Frazier said that he and Mr. McCarthy are working with the Planning District 9 Commission on looking at businesses going into other counties around us and how to “piggy back” and provide development and county jobs through some of those. But, said Mr. McCarthy, Rappahannock is at a disadvantage in bringing in industry compared to other PD 9 counties.The Reassessment Board is also looking at a superior home surcharge for homes in the county which are not taxed at their value.
