Stonewall-Hawthome District Supervisor Robert Anderson said, “If you compare traffic counts on Route 28 (which is supposed to be the worst, or one of the worst, roads in the state) to Route 729 I believe you’ll find Route 729 is a more dangerous road.”
That comment is borne out by statistics. Route 28 has a traffic count of about 6,000 per day at Bealeton, and that gets much higher the further north you go, while Route 729 has a count of 552 vehicles per day.
Since 1992, a four and a half year period, Route 729, from Rt. 211 to Rt. 229, has been the scene for 119 motor vehicle accidents. Ninety of those occurred between Rt. 229 in Culpeper and the Rappahannock-Culpeper County line. Thirty occurred between Rt. 211 at Ben Venue and the Rappahannock County line. The stretch of road, from Route 211 to Route 229, is 21 miles long.
