The Town of Washington Futures Committee met again last Friday evening to continue their discussion with townspeople and interested citizens about the future of the town.
This meeting cleared up a lot of questions that people had following the May 28 meeting. The committee made it clear that the reason the town would want to expand its boundaries would be so that they could control what would happen, if anything, to the area newly added to the town. That would include zoning.
What it comes down to is, do the people of Washington want the town government or the county government to decide what would happen to that land which now surrounds the town?
Ray Gooch, chairman of the Futures Committee, explained that the town will consider seeking planning to see what use land might be put to in a long-range plan. At the end of the meeting, the committee voted to contact Milton Herd, a planner from Loudoun County, who was recommended by County Administrator John McCarthy. If Mr. Herd agrees to work with the town, he will be at a town meeting in. the near future to talk with the committee and interested citizens.
Stew Willis, a member of the committee, summarized some concerns he heard at the May 28 meeting. In part, he said, “In my view, after hearing our citzens, I do not believe it is appropriate to simply expand the town boundaries and then ask a planner to tell us what to do with the land...Rather I would suggest we identify issues and worries and then seek counsel as to how to address them.”
