Fourth of July preparations are in full swing as the Town of Washington gears up for its 22nd annual day-long Independence Day celebration. This year’s Fourth promises to be extra special as one of the highlights is a performance of patriotic music and marching by the Alexandria Royal Fyfes, Drums & Trumpets leading off the evening’s fireworks festivities at 8:25 p.m.
“We’re very enthusiastic about having this group perform before the fireworks” said Ellen Manson, co-chairperson of the Fourth of July committee of the Rappahannock Association for the Arts and the Community.
The fyfes, drums and trumpets groups was featured at the Town’s Bicentennial Christmas Celebration last December, playing as they marched in colonial costume through the streets of Washington, performing at the town hall and The Theatre.
Festivities for this year begin at 10 a.m. as vendors open their booths to the public, up and down Gay Street. The day’s activities include square dancing, political speakers, a sing-along, a children’s bicycle parade, doggers, foot races, a variety of musicians, and a spectacular fireworks display.
There will be vendors selling handmade and handpainted kites, handmade jewelry, fine art prints, paintings, pottery, hand-blown glass, handmade wooden outdoor furniture and swings, handmade puppets and dolls, painted ceramics, dried flowers and different kinds of food, according to Charlie Tompkins, chairman of the Fourth’s vendors committee. There also will be taro; card readings, a massage booth, and a woodworker who does vases.
