“People who went last year had such a good time and a good feeling from participating,” Esther said in considering the feat of almost doubling last year’s funds raised and participants. “They felt they were doing something in the battle against cancer and so they told their friends and we had more people.”
An estimated 500 people participated from all three counties.
The opening ceremonies on Friday, May 30, at Airlie in Wanrenton, conveyed an air of jubilation, especially when the cancer survivors made the first lap of the Relay together. To see them smiling and walking that first lap to celebrate their personal victories over cancer made the efforts of fundraising and the help the funds make in the fight to cure cancer real to all present.
Even the children present, and there were many, seemed to sense how special that lap was and how many individual efforts it signified.
In addition to the Relay itself many other events went on in support of the effort being made. There was tailgate and campsite judging, line dancing, aerobics, face painting, a WKCW live remote, Kevin McDonnell from
