“The 1990s will be remembered as the decade when we measurably turned the tide against cancer.”

The ACS also promotes the Great American Smoke Out which is held annually in November.

The ACS also encourages breast self examinations and helps promote information about the importance of early detection of breast cancer.

In addition, the ACS works to prevent cancer by speaking out against smoking, encouraging healthy diets and lifestyles, and providing information about mammograms.

Patient services provided by ACS are expanding each year. They now supply cancer patients with assistance financially in obtaining pain medication, nutritional support, bed pans, turbans, wigs, hospital beds and information on all types of cancer.

They also have the Reach to Recovery program for breast cancer patients and that program provides patients with a temporary prosthesis, materials for exercises, information booklets and a visit from an ACS volunteer.

The ACS office may be reached at 825-0754 in Culpeper or 347-2924 in Warrenton.
