“There is balance of subjectivity and objectivity that becomes apparent in the process of on location landscape painting. Other painting experiences don’t compare to it,” said Mike Francis.
Mike is an award winning realistic landscape painter and art instructor from Arlington who will conduct a three-day “plein air” Country Landscape Painting Workshop in oil or acrylic at Shimmering Meadows Studio later this month.
“There is a diverse stylistic range within these possibilities,” he said of how students view landscapes. “Not everyone perceives it in the same way. It is a misconception that people often have. Another misconception is they think they have to be human cameras. That’s not the way people see landscapes when they paint them from life. It’s not a photo, where the light and location are determined for you.”
“Plein air,” or painting in the open air, the student experiences a visual and emotional sense of scene that lends itself to the work in progress.
The workshop will be designed to teach the fundamentals of landscape painting. Emphasis on color and design will be stressed.
Mike is master at demonstrating approach and technique, and will take his students step by step through the process from composition and drawing in to learning to see and use paint color to bring the painting to life.
“We will go out and set up and paint. We’ll use two different settings each day. The light changes in the middle of the day. We’ll paint in the morning and afternoon to get a sense of sites and then bring paintings back to the studio to finish,” he said.
