We do a great disservice to our schools and society if we do not insist on proper behavior from young people.”
Are our children able to be educated in these unsafe environments? Th^ answer is “No”, says Dr. Henry Bauer} a chemistry professor at the University of Virginia. In a Richmond Times Dispatch article dated May 21, Da Bauer says, “Freshmen come not only unprepared in English, math and basi£ science, but they come unschooled in. studying...I’m not condemning students wholesale. The students are the greatest victims of grade inflation and lower expectations.”
I agree, schools should be educational institutions, not substitutes for detention centers. There is no single, simple solution to this complex problem, but one way I believe we can help to put a learning atmosphere back in our schools is to reduce compulsory education age from 18 to age 16. In this way students who want to stay in school would be in a learning environment free from many of those who only want to cause trouble.
This solution isn’t Democrat or Republican, liberal or conservative, it’s just plain common sense.
