Warrants
The list of warrants was paid with some discussion. Among the items paid were: $76,430 was paid for two 1998 64-passenger school buses; $4,491.03 to Cii Services for repairs to the RCES air-conditioning cooling towers which are no longer under warranty; $8,726.63 to Edward’s Plumbing and Electric for repairs completed during the summer; $2,309 to Hale and White for the RCHS roof; $1,032 for Hepatitis B vaccine for school personnel; and $42,135.36 to the Regional Control School Board for Piedmont Technical Vocational Services.
Sports
Mike Tupper, RCHS athletic director, recommended adding girls’ soccer this spring and eliminating boys’ junior varsity soccer to balance the athletic program. Most schools do not offer junior varsity soccer and it is easier to schedule matches for girls’ soccer than for junior varsity soccer, he said.
The varsity will now include younger students in grade 9. It is almost impossible to have a junior varsity team as well as a girls’ team with the present facilities and transportation available. An additional coach will be required, he said, and would need to be paid $1600 (which is the amount paid to the boys’ varsity soccer coach). He advised the board they should look for a coach now. Soccer should have an assistant coach in addition to assist in the event injuries occur, he added.
Richard Price speaking for the Rappahannock Soccer League said he did not know who could take over the junior varsity soccer program. It is possible to put together a U-16, team, but he was not sure there were other teams available to play. Gangel offered to help with transportation if students were already in the junior varsity program.
A wrestling coach was not found and the wrestling season is cancelled for this year. Tupper said he would like golf and tennis to be added to the program in the next three years.
