Wrens stay mated through the winter. That is why I hear them conversing in song on cold icy days. The pair is staying in touch. They also maintain territories during nonbreeding months. When I hear the wren sing here, if I listen carefully, I will hear another, far off, answer as if saying: “Yes, I know you are there. Just remember, I am here where I will stay as along as you stay there.
A pair nested in a clothes pin bag that hung on the porch of a log house Lee and I lived in near McLean. They raised four young that successfully fledged. During the cold winter that followed, I watched from a window as three wrens silently tucked themselves into the old nest in the bag.
At the end of a day in late February there was an altercation on the porch: much churring, considerable curtsying and flying from the clothes pin bag to a bench and back again. After this, two birds spent the night in the old nest.
Was it the younger bird forced out of the nest? I am convinced it was, though there is no proof. That spring a new nest was built, more eggs laid, and three young added to the world of wrens. That satisfies me. One pair stayed mated through a year.
