tively identify your target and what is beyond it before you fire. Never shoot at sounds or shapes.

• Make sure your firearm’s barrel and action are clear of obstructions.

• Wear ear and eye protection, as appropriate.

• Always keep the firearm unloaded until ready to use. Whenever you pick up a firearm, immediately open the action and look into the chamber (which should be clear of ammunition).

• Always unload firearms when not in use and leave the actions open.

• Use only the proper size ammunition. Most guns have the ammunition type stamped on the barrel. Ammunition is identified by information on the box or sometimes stamped on the cartridge itself.

• Empty your firearm and carry it in a case to and from your hunting and shooting sites.

• Never point a firearm at anything that you do not want to shoot.

• Even if you have a clear shot of the game animal, never fire in a direction in which there may be people, livestock or family pets.

• Until you are actually ready to fire, don’t place your finger on the trigger. When carrying or holding your firearm, rest your finger on the trigger guard or alongside the gun instead.

• Never climb trees, fences, jump ditches or logs, etc., with a loaded firearm.

• Never pull a firearm toward you by the muzzle.

• Always store firearms and ammunition separately out of reach of children and careless adults.

• Do not use alcohol or mood-altering drugs when hunting or driving.

Non-hunter tips

During hunting season, non-hunters need to be safetyconscious, too. Most hunters are skilled, responsible sportsmen who are careful where and what they shoot. But there are others in the woods this time of year who don’t follow the rules.
