For instance, statistics show that deaths dip before individuals' birthdays. In New York City, where there is a large Jewish population, deaths are lower than would be expected on a random basis just before the Jewish Day of Atonement. Similarly, mortality rates drop dramatically just before the Harvest Moon Festival, the Chinese equivalent of Thanksgiving. The flip side of this event-related dip in deaths is the fact that the number of deaths rises dramatically after the event has been observed, showing the importance of these days.
