Cranberries have started to arrive in stores and to me that’s the first indication that the holiday season is about to begin.
This bright red berry is native to North America. Long before the settlers came to America, the Indians enjoyed wild cranberries. They ate the tart berries cooked with maple syrup or honey.
Cranberries have been cultivated since 1840 and are an important commercial crop. Approximately 70 percent of the nation’s crop is produced in Massachusetts. Other large producing states include Washington, Oregon, New Jersey and Wisconsin.
