At first, Luke thought the incumbent, Ron Makela, might continue in office. But after investigating, Luke realized the office would be deemed vacant if the elected member does not qualify for office the day before the initial meeting of the School Board in January 2000.
If the office becomes vacant, the School Board would have 45 days to fill the vacancy with a qualified voter from Jackson District. In addition, a special election would be held in November 2000, as long as the School Board petitions the Circuit Court to issue a Writ of Election. The person who wins the special election would serve the remaining three years of the term.
Even if Cordani declines the office she just won, she would be able to run again in the special election next November.
