Ron Makela lost the Jackson District School Board race to Rebecca Cordani last week due, in part, to a last minute memo mailed to the district’s voters endorsed and authorized by the Rappahannock County Republican Party.
Cordani did not campaign and actually wanted to pull out of the race due to a family matter. The fact that she won suggests that the memo made a large impact on the election results.
Nancy Newlin of the Registrar said, “The mailing that went out endorsing her on Monday is probably the reason she won.”
The memo stated that the Rappahannock County schools were fully accredited four years ago, and now they are not. The high school is “provisionally accredited,” and the elementary school is “accredited with warning.” The memo then said that if schools lose their accreditation, colleges may "not accept transcripts from these students.
The memo stated that student test scores were low and very little improvement had been made so far.
The next point made concerned the $3 million being spent on additions to the high school. The memo stated that taxpayers did not have a say in the matter as “Ron Makela and a majority of School Board members side-stepped a referendum so that voters wouldn’t have any say in the matter.”
The final thrust concerned the fact that the high school expansion had gone $1 million over budget. And that the School Board had turned over responsibility for the new ball field to the Board of' Supervisors.
