fall during wartime.
.The Civil War marked a great time of discord and unrest in our nation. More Americans died during the Civil War than all other wars put together. And many of them did not even know what they were fighting for.
Of course there were fervent abolitionists and antiabolitionists of slavery. But not all shared their views.
Soldiers went to battle oftentimes because it was the thing to do. They had no idea of the horrors to come.
Life changed as they knew it once they enlisted. There was not adequate food and shelter. Most soldiers subsisted on biscuits issued by the Government which were hard as rocks.
More than half of the soldiers who died during the Civil War did not die during combat. Syphilis and dysentery were leading killers.
And most people are unaware that camps, similar to famous war camps used in Nazi Germany, were used to house and starve prisoners.
Most soldiers that lived through the Civil War returned home with amputated limbs and were 1 severely handicapped. And the years of reconstruction were as difficult as the war itself.
