qualified coaches. School Board member-elect Rose Ann Sharp expressed “hopes that the perception you have of this meeting is that people finally understand the importance of athletics.”
Other speakers supported teacher-coaches, the hiring of outside coaches, and criticized the board for permitting the issue to be raised to the school board level. In the end, however, the board appeared to be persuaded b\ the status quo, and agreed to establish a broad-based committee to review the athletic vision and coach hiring practices, but to continue present practices while the review is under way. As Dr. Tole remarked, “The decision made by the board will be made on the basis of what is good for the children.” Election comments
In other public comments, Kathryn Treanor’s dissatisfaction with school board changes resulted from recent elections was clear in her statement that “There are forces within Rappahannock that have changed the way people are being elected to supervisor and especially to the school board. We need to heighten activism.” She went on to express her gratitude for tb*; “dedication, concern and seriousness” with which the five members of the present board have discharged their duties, and concluded by saying “I honor you.” Dr. Tole remarked that “the forces may seem new, but they’ve only been dormant,” but refused further comment at this time.
