property and did not notice the dead deer until the afternoon. Atkins told Natalie’s father that the deer was shot right there judging by the tracks and where the bullet went in.
Hathaway, who works at * Mountainside Market in Sperryville, had to go pick up her kids from school before she could address the problem.
When she got back, Hathaway called the Sheriff’s Department and a woman from that office notified the Virginia Department of Transportation.
The deer was not removed initially. And Hathaway went on with her life. But her father, James Swindler, came on Saturday to check on the situation and discovered the deer’s antlers were gone. Someone had come and sawed off the antlers.
The Rappahannock News contacted Hathaway who said, “I think it was somebody driving by, early in the morning, and shot from the road. It looked like it was shot from the road. Being at the end of the driveway.”
“I want to get in touch with the game warden to see if they can put a fake deer in my driveway to try to catch the people that did this.”
“To waste any life like this is a shame. It could have fed a lot of people. It’s just a complete and total waste of life. It has created incredibly bad karma for whoever shot it.”
Black powder hunting season began Nov. 1 and regular rifle season starts Nov. 15.
Hathaway has some advice, “If kids are out playing in the woods, they need to wear bright orange jackets and hats. Emma (her daughter) won’t even go out to the swing set without her orange hat or jacket on.”
