I have been a Republican all
of my life, even attending the state convention as a delegate when Sen. John Warner was fighting for the party nomination against Dick Obenshain. I recently received a copy of a letter “Authorized by the Rappahannock County Republican Party” which was sent to voters in Jackson District to influence the recent school board election between Ron Makela and Rebecca Cordani.
The letter was a typical, extremist, misinformation campaign filled with half truths, false statement and, in my view, bordered on slander. Mr. Makela and the School Board were maligned and inappropriately accused of causing the Rappahannock County Elementary School to receive “the lowest accreditation a school can receive before it loses its accreditation”. This is absolutely not true. Couched around this misstatement of fact were threats that “ the State Board of Education could come in and run our schools for us”, and “colleges may not accept transcripts from our students”.
