Dr. Tole stressed the need to promote the understanding of the process of learning, the “energetic use of the mind,” and to “provide students with a sense that most human pursuits have value, not just those in which we are personally interested” in order to help students foster logical thought processes and critical thinking, and to look beyond themselves and “achieve a balance between what goes inside and outside of ourselves.” To emphasize, he referred to'a story about Robert E. Lee who, when asked by a young mother to bless a baby, “took the infant in his arms and looked at it and then at her and slowly said, ‘Teach him he must deny himself.’”
