American Cancer Society officials announced last week that Rappahannock County’s 1999 Relay for Life was the most successful in the Mid-Atlantic region. The relay, which was held last May at the Rappahannock County Elementary School, also achieved seventh place in the entire United States.
Standings are determined on a per capita basis, which is why Rappahannock was a^le to beat the much larger counties in Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, , Delaware, and the District of Columbia, the ; jurisdictions which make up the MidAtlantic region.
Mrs. Ester Settle, one of the relay’s prin1 ciple organizers, said that the achievement was all the more special for being their first effort. Although Rappahannock County had participated in relays in prior years, the 1999 event was the first organized for and by Rappahannock residents and held here in the county.
Last year’s event raised $61,000. Forty, seven teams of up to ten persons each participated and 27 of those teams raised more than $1,000 each. The three top money raising teams were the Brady Bunch team, the
