The hole can be filled with straw and covered with a tarp to keep the soil from freezing, and to keep the hole from filling up with water or ice. The soil that is removed from the hole can be stored in a wheelbarrow in a garage or shed.
Watering is just as important when planting in cold weather as it is any other time of the year. Watering at planting helps settle the soil around the roots and removes air pockets. It also provides the roots with a good supply of moisture. Plants do give off some moisture during the winter, especially evergreens. If they cannot replace that moisture by taking up water through the roots, they can suffer winter damage.
