Superintendent’s report
Superintendent Dr. Gangel reported on the redefinition of the vocational education program, and presented recommendations for this “vocademics” for the next two years. He noted that the closing of the Piedmont Technical School requires that Rappahannock assume the responsibility for providing vocational education, and recommendations call for the hiring of four new teachers over the next two school years to teach the new courses. New course offerings include: Entrepreneur; Computer Assembly and Repair; MediaAVeb Page Development; Building Trades; Maintenance and Repair; Culinary; and Business. Some of the new courses will be taught by existing instructional staff, but new instructors will needed to be hired to teach others.
Dr. Gangel reported on the progress of the RCHS addition, noting that slab pouring has been delayed due to inclement weather, but should be accomplished Dec. 15 and 16 and, if so, work on the addition will be on schedule. He presented change order recommendations that include addition of electrical outlets, Fixtures, and alarm stations that will add some $3300 to the cost of the addition, but reminded the board that an earlier change order reduced the cost by some $9000. These recommendations were approved, but the board instructed that he seek to redress from the architectural firm, Hayes Large, because the items added in the change orders should have been included in original designs.
Gangel presented recommendations that Dec. 23, 24, 27, 30 and 31 be established as holidays for 12-month employees during the 1999 Christmas vacation, and he met no opposition. He also noted that the 1999-2000 calendar required an additional work day, but it was resolved that this day be added after “seeing how the winter weather goes.” The 2000-2001 school calendar was presented and accepted, and the calendar for the upcoming budget cycle was reviewed.
