Let there be light
If you like to put up lights outside or in for the holidays, spend a few moments on strategy before dragging out all those tangled strings of lights. First, pick a color scheme. Just because every neighbor for five miles has done his house in all white icicle lights, doesn’t mean you have to.
Be original and have fun. You may want strings of multi-colored lights or lights all in one color, but beware of mixing too many variations. A string of all white lights usually doesn’t look good next to a string of multi-colored lights. Be consistent, too. Make sure all your windows are done in the same fashion.
There always seems to be one string of leftover lights when you are finally finished decorating. Before you toss them back in the basement, take a medium to large basket and spray paint it with acrylic paint. Once it is dry, cut a small one-inch hole at the bottom of one side of the basket then thread that leftover string of lights through several large pine cones and fill the basket. Add some ribbon or a few sprigs of spruce and you have a great table topper.
