Washington’s Fourth of July celebration for the year 2000 could be in trouble. According to the Town’s Fourth of July committee chair, Charlie Tompkins, and co-chair, Ellen Manson, the event is facing a variety of difficulties, from waning public interest to competition from newer events in nearby towns like Culpeper and Warrenton. Tompkins also expressed Some anxiety because of the lack of volunteers.
Meeting attendees shared various and sometimes opposing views for improving the celebration.
Suggestions included delaying the start of celebrations until evening and focusing on high quality food and wine vendors, increasing exposure and attendance, directing the event toward Rappahannock residents only, and attracting greater attendance by engaging better known musical acts. Underlying all issues, however, is the need for more volunteers, both to plan and run the Fourth of July activities.
