Big shoes to fill

Dr. Tole’s departure from the School

Board is not good news for county.

Stonewall-Hawthorne District voters spoke last election day, and decided to replace long-time School Board member and current School Board Chair Dr. John Tble. Rumors abound as to the reasons for his removal—they include “his inability to control fechool costs,” the “poor showing” on the most recent < Standard of Learning tests, his lack of campaign prowess, and the “lack of sufficient Christian education” in the school system. 1 Tole antagonists should have been there. They should have watched this intelligent, concerned, and dedicated man struggle with the management and improvement of a school system that most certainly gained from his years of toil. They should have been there to watch him conduct School Board business with professionalism and open-mindedness. They should have been there to see him successfully per, form, in his most understated manner, the business of

j caring for our children without regard for himself. The new board will be seated quite soon and will have at its core some dedicated and hard-working veterans, and some new members who have not yet had their “trial by fire.” That will come soon too, and they may find that I theoretical cost cutting bears little resemblance to real cost cutting—that SOL test results do show real school improvements—that School Board work is a full time job. We’ll be there.
