I he laws ot the treaty (it covers hunting regulations, also) were also aimed at egg collectors. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, complete sets, or “clutches,” of eggs were sought after by collectors, much as stamps are collected today.
A number of ornithologists got their start by specializing in climbing trees and bringing the whole set of eggs down, where they were blown of their contents and sold to collectors. I read of one collector who brought the eggs down in his mouth! The rarer the bird, the more valuable was the complete set of eggs.
I wish to thank George Fenwick for reminding me of my misdemeanor. On the other hand, I think the goldfinch nest displayed in our stall at the barns may have sparked an interest in birds that resulted in the kind of conservation ethic exemplified by George Fenwick. That was my intent and is an explanation — not an excuse.
