Rappahannock County Elementary School’s fourth grade class instructed by Mrs. Mary Gardiner Edmonds and her aide, Mrs. Deborah Hitt, won third place in the state in the Geography Department competition which was held recently in Virginia Beach sponsored by the Virginia Education Association. The instructors and students were proud of the relief map of Virginia showing economic wealth. In the Soil and Water Conservation District poster contest Lavonne Adkins was district winner in the fourth-sixth grade division. She was given a $25 savings bond while Tammy Armentrout received $10 for a second place and Pam Woodward got $5 for third. The Youth Conservation Contest is sponsored annually and Rappahannock students have been consistent winners. Orange, Madison and Culpeper are with Rappahannock in the district.

Members of the Board of Supervisors indicated at a Monday evening work session on the school budget for next year that they were interested in cutting about $100,000 from that budget. Elected by their peers, Bill Atkins and Melanie Woodward were named King and Queen of the Junior/Senior Prom, held last Saturday. Following the prom, many of the students attended an afterprom party Lakeside in Culpeper. Next Tuesday, May 1, Washington’s 122 registered voters will elect a new mayor, treasurer and five members of the Town Council. For the posts of mayor and treasurer, the incumbents, Dean Morehouse and Brad Fisher, are unopposed. However, there are nine candidates for the five council seats. —COMPILED BY BARBARA C. WAYLAND
