There are many things that make where we live a special place. High among them is the sense of community we have here. That sense, while maybe not rare elsewhere, is not so abundant in many places as it is here.
I had the good fortune recently to speak with someone in a special position to appreciate that sense of community. Jeanie McNear coordinates the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in the county.
The RSVP matches up senior and retired community members with groups that need help, and helps citizens and groups in need find volunteers. She is a bridge, if you will, between those who want to help out and those who need help. If you need a hand, or are in a position to lend one, give her a call.
Speaking of the group, and of her role, Mrs. McNear fills you with a sense of the value of community service, not just to those who receive, but to those who give. She describes her role as “a kind of clearing house for citizens in the county age 55 and over who would like to do volunteer work in the county”.
Mrs. McNear feels that her senior volunteers “have a lot of experience and talents and interests and older people who have the time to give to their county can give quite a lot. I’ve enjoyed getting to know many wonderful people
