lack of attention I paid to proper nutrition, rest, exercise, or maybe the too intense attention I gave to Tom’s Organic Coffee or its partner, the natural American Spirit cigarette.

In any event I completed the form, made the appointment and, on the appointed day, showed up at the clinic. So far, none of these things hurt either but, I silently cautioned, “it’s only just begun.”

Clinic co-director Kathleen Meier met me as I entered the Healing Arts Center and introduced me to first year clinic student, Valerie Wagg, who was to manage my processing. “The cost of the consultation is free,” says the brochure, so Clinic clients must be prepared for the attendance of a roomful of students. Valerie was one, and she led me into a consultation room where I met three other students: Jan Cole, Desy Campbell, and Kathleen Quelland, as well as Ms. Meier’s partner, Theresa Board wine.

The intake portion of my consult was none too onerous. We spent nearly an hour discussing my perceived ailment, my medical history, my family’s history, and anecdotes about life in general.

Despite the fact that it was ‘six against one’ I did not feel at all exposed or uncomfortable—perhaps the students are taught to be unobtrusive, or maybe they have an innate sense that enables them to permeate the space with a calm that was ferocious in its quietude.

After the ‘intake’ Valerie led me out to the waiting area where I sipped tea while the neophyte healers and their teachers devised a protocol that would help me begin the process of deep tissue tonification; the “slow change at a cellular level” that is best promoted by the nutrients in plants. At this point I was reasonably certain that no part of this process would hurt. The experience so far was quite pleasant and calming, and all
