An "effective school" is defined as one in which at least 95 percent of all the students at each grade level shall demonstrate minimum academic Mastery.
In the early 1970's two researchers, Ronald Edmonds and Larry Lezotte, investigated why the students in some schools were consistently successful. They were curious because previous research had shown that student achievement was linked to such factors as socioeconomic level, race and gender.
Edmonds and Lezotte, however, discovered particular schools where children achieved despite circumstances which had been proven to interfere with learning. They studied these schools, labeled effective schools, identifying the characteristics they had in common. These have fceen organized into the following, called correlates:
