habitual offender.

The officers were working the checkpoint at about 11 p.m. on July 23 when Eugene Vernon Walton, 54, approached them in a 1995 Mazda 2-door.

When Walton was unable to produce a driver's license, a check was run that revealed his status as an habitual offender.

Walton was charged with driving without a license and driving after being declared an habitual offender.

Theft investigated

Larceny of a portable CD player, 30 CDs and a carrying case was reported on the morning of July 23, after a guest at the Bleu Rock Inn west of Washington reported the items missing from his car.

According to Maj. Williams, the owner could not recall if he had locked the car the night before, but there were no signs of forced entry to the vehicle.

Dep. Mark Currence is investigating the theft.
