For the third consecutive
summer, Headwaters,
the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, has provided a unique and exciting outlet for the creative energy of our students.
Approximately 55 students, from the second through the eighth grades, spent the week of July 17th exploring sculpture, pottery, photography, dance, gardening and science. These workshops were completely free for our students and accessible by bus transportation. — Since Headwaters was established in 1997, it has made possible many exciting programs: minigrants for our public education teachers, public education forums, summer adventure youth trips, and more.
Summer Workshops 2000 is yet another excellent program intended to enrich the learning experience of our youth.
According to the Project Coordinator, Theresa Light, Headwaters took a positive approach in developing these workshops. Mrs. Light stated, "I think our instructors and artists were liberated in some ways by our approach. We did not say, "we have this much money—what is the best you can do within these limits." We said, "If you could dream up a program for students, what would it look like?" The artists and instructors submitted proposals and budgets to Mrs. Light who synthesized them into one, cohesive proposal.
Although the cost was high, the Headwaters Board did not hesitate to approve it. "Knowing that I had the support of the Board, I then set about the task of getting additional funding to assist Headwaters in covering the cost," stated Mrs. Light.
Virginia Commission for the Arts (VGA) also saw the merit in Summer Workshops 2000 and came through with a matching grant. According to Mrs. Light, VCA support has been 'instrumsntal in Headwaters Summer Programs over the past three years. "VCA is an incredible resource to counties like ours who are committed to enriching the artistic and educational experiences of our students. VCA has been an -important player -in many of* the wonderful programs you've seen in this county over the years."
