William Heddings of Catlett wrote: "Few people know much about this bird that is almost extinct." He is right on both counts.
Because it is a creature of the night, the bird, like an owl, has an aura of mystery about it. The loud, constantly repeated calls have only added to its quality of being there, yet not there. For many, it remained only a sound of summer nights.
Heddings continued: "In 1928, I found a dead one in this hayfield. Its craw was packed full of ants."
