Heddings has seen a natural world of the Virginia Piedmont that is rapidly disappearing- His letter ended: "I always enjoyed their calls but I have not heard one for several years. Why?"
I hope I have at least given a partial answer to that question, dismal though it may be.
A letter from Paul Cornwell of Sterling was equally interesting.
In referring to my account of a whippoorwill nest under a tree where a broadwinged hawk was nesting, he wrote: "I had a similar experience many years ago, except the hawk was: a sharp-shin (sharpshinned hawk). A friend and I found a nest of a whippoorwill, and the hawk had a nest in the tree directly overhead. The whippoorwill raised its brood without interference from the hawk."
Both letters reveal observant men who had the time, inclination and intellectual awareness to observe nature and reap spiritual joy.
