It’s one for the history books:
Rappahannock's own Cooter and His Garage Band, some of country music's best musicians, will be teaming up with the Rappahannock Historical Society at historic Montpelier in the F. T. Valley to put on a "Swingin' Country Picnic" fund raiser on Sunday, Sept. 24, from 2 p.m. till dusk. Madison County's Pig 'n Steak will be providing the barbecue, ribs, chicken, potato salad, slaw, baked beans, you name it. Advance tickets are $25 a person and can be purchased at Cooter's Place, Settle's Grocery and Garage, Old Sperryville Bookshop, Hackley's Country Store, F. T. Valley Grocery, Talk of the Town, Rappahannock News, Rappahannock Clerk's Office and Rappahannock Historical Society. The fund raiser is being held to furnish the new addition to the Historical Society on Gay Street. Guests will be able to select from a brochure those items that are needed to be purchased as furniture and equipment. Ben "Cooter" Jones, the former “Dukes of Hazzard" star and Georgia Congressman, and his wife Alma Viator, a top public relations specialist, have generously donated their talents and nine-member band for this fund raiser. So, too, have the daughters of the late James W. Fletcher, who own Montpelier. They graciously have donated the use of their plantation house, which is located on Route 231, seven miles south of Sperryville.
