The Old Sperryville Bookshop will offer something special for everyone this weekend with a Christmas Open House featuring Santa Claus, the stained-glass artistry of Patricia Brennan, and the prose and poetry of Eugene McCarthy, who will be on hand to sign copies of his latest books.
Santa Claus will make a special appearance at the bookshop on Main Street in the historic village of Sperryville on Saturday, from 11 a.m. until noon. Though he is very busy with final preparations for Christmas, he told bookshop owners Jim and Joan Gannon that he could stop by for one hour to read Christmas stories to children and lead them in singing Christmas carols.
Children of all ages are invited to attend the Santa hour, and every child who comes will be given a free book. They will also have a chance to tell Santa their wishes for Christmas, and to see the bookshop's Christmas train in action.
On Saturday afternoon, from 2 to' 4 p.m., Rappahannock artist Patricia Brennan will be at the bookshop for a "Meet the Artist" event featuring her colorful stained glass creations. Her work specializes in Celtic designs, custom etching and painting on glass, with items ranging from small accent pieces to full-sized windows.
The artist will be available to talk about her techniques and the full range of her work, which includes custom-designed windows featuring family crests. The bookshop has on display a good sampling of her creations, including a beautiful window of swans upon a lake and another of an angel.
On Sunday, from 3 to 5 p.m., former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate Eugene McCarthy will be at the bookshop to sign and discuss his many works of prose and poetry.
