On rnday, Dec. 8, the Panthers faced the teams from Highland School here at home. This was an excellent game as both teams, evenly matched, battled for 32 minutes to come up with a winner. The Rappahannock squad struggled early in the game and was down by as many as 14 points.
The first half ended with Highland on top 32-25. The Panthers came out of the half time break and began to chisel away at the Highland lead. Rappahannock won the third quarter and closed the gap to three points shortly after the fourth quarter began. Junior Jamie Keys came up big sinking many critical baskets as he led the Panthers with 17 points. His effort along with senior Mark Wharton's, and some hustling team defense at the end contributed to a 47-46 victory for the RCHS team.
The Junior Varsity also won, beating the Highland JV squad 48-36. Sophomore Ryan Brown led the JV scorers with 11 points.
After the Highland game, Varsity Head Coach, Mike Dayton said, "The win was nice and I was glad the team got to feel the excitement and satisfaction that comes with winning. But victories or wins will take care of themselves. The game of basketball is about hustle, desire, and execution. We did not execute that well and we need to stay focused on that part of our game. Execution is the key to team success. It was a good week and we finish up next week with two non-District games before our District opening game with Clarke on Friday night, Dec. 15.
