increased work loads from additional requirements from the state. Most sadly our children carry the burden of inequities that the state imposes on localities.

The consortium VaCares is recommending adjustments to the funding formula to reflect the major changes that have resulted in increased costs for local school divisions that are not covered by the current formula. Salaries and benefits for staff need to be calculated on true costs. State programmatic mandates for music, art, technology, and counseling, need to be accompanied by funding to assist the programs.

Technology needs to be considered a consumable resource like textbooks and receive adequate attention not only for.. hardware, and software, but also training staff to teach topics required of today's youth, the NetGeneration. Rising capital costs for maintenance and new construction is a prevalent need throughout the state and is also not fairly supported.

Rappahannock County will have a chance to hear about this movement to make the Commonwealth accountable and bring itself in line with other state's contributions. Please plan on attending the Dec. 19 meeting of the Rappahannock County School Board in the High School Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. You will have an opportunity to see and better understand what is happening in our Commonwealth to improve children's education and reduce the cost burden on the localities.
