(eighth grade team) also had two games last week. On Tuesday, Dec. 5, they traveled to Marshall Middle School (MMS) in Fauquier County. The Jr. Panthers lost to MMS 53-14. "We re still a little outclassed by these bigger Fauquier middle schools," said Coach Mike Leake, "But we re getting better and growing with each contest. That’s what's important at this stage."
On Friday, Dec. 8 prior to the Highland games, the Jr. Panthers hosted Cedar Lee Middle School (CLMS) for their home opener. It was a great opener for the Jr. Panthers as they scrapped their way back into the game and gave themselves a chance to win at the buzzer. However the shot was off and they lost 20-18.
Monte Christian led all scorers with ten points and Jason Jenkins added five points for the Rappahannock side. After the game, Coach Gary Settle added, "I was proud of how they hung in there and played hard until the end. We want them to get that first win so they can feel the excitement. Hopefully, that will come soon."
Volleyball
The Lady Panthers had a tough week with four contests, three of them on the road. On Monday, Dec. 4 they played away at Luray. Both the Varsity and JV lost their matches. The JV squad played very well, however, winning the second game of the match 15-6 before losing 15-11 in the final game.
The next night Tuesday, Dec. 5, the Lady Panthers were on the road again this time to Page County High School. The Varsity squad couldn t avoid the unforced errors and continued to struggle with their serves. They lost the match two games to none. The JV Lady Panthers played very well again. After losing a tough first game 16-14, they soundly beat the page JV team 15-2 in the second game. However, they fell wav short in the third and deciding game, losing 15-4 and thereby losing the match.
